What a year it has been! |
|
In my second year at Hinton time has really been flying! I continue to work on my curriculum, trying to tie the past into the present, emphasize critical thinking and active learning in my classroom. All of this has definitely kept me alert and active. We have reorganized things a little this year by moving Geography to the first semester of the Freshman year to better keep the American History curriculum connected. It has gone well so far, but the true test will be when this year’s freshmen become sophomores and continue the American history program. I continue to operate the informal debate club, and |

though our numbers have lessened slightly there are still several dedicated students willing to analyze current issues and debate them from all sides. A new project this year has been the creation of a Chess club as well. Though still somewhat informal, it has been popular. As we work the bugs out of the process I expect to see some real growth in the more dedicated players as they gain insight and experience. And there are real academic benefits to the program as well as the opportunity for extra-curricular involvement for more students. I have just finished up a successful season of Junior High wrestling where I was |

happy to see tremendous growth in a number of young athletes still new to the sport. They each grew as an individual and a competitor this year and I look forward to seeing what the years to come may bring! The weather is warming up and soon it will be time for Junior High Track. It looks to be a good year working with the boys as our team is good sized, with a variety of talents present to build a solid foundation for competition. I look forward to working and running with these young athletes to help them learn an appreciation for the sport and a sense of belonging to the school. My hope is that sun continues to shine, the south breeze keeps blowing, and we soon can see green all around us! By: Pete Haefs |

BLACKHAWK |

Monday, March 2 marked 50 years of Dr. Seuss’s books. In honor of Dr. Seuss and his accomplishments the discovergarten classes at Hinton, as well as other classrooms, celebrated by participating in various activities and crafts. On Monday we celebrated by reading one of Dr. Seuss’s classics; Green Eggs and Ham. After reading the story, each student had the opportunity to help prepare and then eat green eggs and ham. On Tuesday, we read the book; Inside, outside upside down. We wore our clothes backwards and inside out. Wednesday brought many interesting, colorful socks as we celebrated by wearing “wacky socks”. We read the story; Fox In Socks. Thursday we read |

another Dr. Seuss favorite; There’s a Wocket in my Pocket! A book of ridiculous rhymes. Each student was given a brown paper bag and asked to bring something from home and make a silly rhyme. We also made a famous Dr. Seuss trademark, his red and white striped hat. We then wore our Dr. Seuss hats and enjoyed many compliments! Discovergarten has now started its Circus Unit and we will finish by going on a field trip to the circus on April 17! How time flies when you are having fun! By: Jacquie Sitzmann |
