High SchoolRegistrationBy Ms. Sue Martens Registration for all students will be done by mail this year. High school students wanting a copy of their schedule should stop in the office to pick it up August 20-27. Our guidance counselor, Mr. Hudek, will be available August 20-21, should any student need assistance in making schedule changes. Parents and students are reminded that some of the dual credit classes require students to purchase their own books. These classes include Sociology, AP English, Psychology, Auto Mechanics, and other college courses.
Fall College ClassesBy Ms. Sue Martens The early bird Psychology class will begin on Thursday, August 30. Students registered for the fall Psychology class need to make arrangements for their textbook. They may either contact someone from last year’s class or call the office to be put on the order list. The book order will be placed on August 21, so students should not wait until the first day of school to arrange for the book. WITCC classes will begin on Wednesday, August 22. These classes begin prior to Hinton Community School’s opening day. Students should begin attending on the 22nd. WITCC online classes will begin on Monday, August 27. Students should be prepared to begin their class on the 27th.

Senior Open CampusBy Ms. Sue Martens The Hinton Community School Board policy allows for open campus for seniors. Under this policy, seniors may leave the building whenever they are not in class. It is hoped that this privilege will help our seniors become better managers of their time before they leave home for college or work. In order to be eligible for open campus, parents must sign a permission slip for their student. The slips will mailed to senior parents prior to the start of school and will need to be turned in to the high school office on or before the first day of school. To maintain eligibility, seniors will be expected to sign in and out of the building each time they leave and return, and to be on time for all classes following an open campus period. Open campus will begin the first day of school for all seniors that have turned in their permission slips. However, ALL seniors are expected to be at the 8:30 assembly on the 1st day, regardless of their schedule.

Changes in High School FacultyMs. Sue Martens We have one new teacher joining the high school staff this year. Mr. Ben Hertenstein will be teaching technology classes and applied math. Mr. Hertenstein is a graduate of Wartburg College. He will be replacing Mr. David Attrill, who retired at the end of the last school year. Mr. Hertenstein’s wife, Allison, is the Family and Consumer Science teacher for Hinton. They have one child, Ian, age 1 ½ , and reside in Hinton. |
Student RecordsBy Ms. Sue Martens The regulations for management, content, and storage of student records are outlined in the Iowa Administrative Code (12:3). In keeping within the requirements, the Hinton Community School District maintains cumulative records (working files) and permanent records (graduates / students who have moved). The files contain two types of information: 1) directory information and 2) personally identifiable information. The files are confidentially protected by FERPA regulations. Only directory information may be periodically disseminated to outside agencies such as military, colleges, etc. If you do not want the directory information released on your child, call the superintendent’s office (947-4329). |
Picking Up Students at School Dismissal TimeBy Mr. Al Steen Parents we need your help! At school dismissal time, our students riding busses exit the building through the south exit. Our busses are loaded south of the building. Please do not drive around to the south to pick up students. For safety reasons we must restrict the traffic on the south side of the building during dismissal time. Any student that is being picked up should exit from the front of the building. Parking spaces are available in the front of the building for parents that are picking up their children. Please use these spaces and instruct your children to exit from the front of the building when they are not riding the bus. With your help, we will be able to ensure we have a safe and orderly dismissal for all of our students. |
