New Student Core Curriculum Plan for Eighth Graders Entering High SchoolBy Ms. Sue Martens, Principal Effective with the 2006-2007 school year, Iowa law requires all students to complete a high school and career development plan by the end of their 8th grade year. The plan must include an outline of the coursework needed in grades 9-12 to graduate from high school and should support the student’s post-secondary education and career options. Student must identify their career options and the plan must be signed by a parent or guardian and filed with the district. A high school planning meeting will be held for 8th grade students and their parents on Monday, March 12 at 7:00 PM in the library. The purpose of the meeting is to help students with their four-year plan and to up-date students and parents on high school graduation requirements, GPA, class rank, ACT testing, and college planning. High School courses and the scheduling process will be explained. Students attending the planning meeting will have priority in signing up for elective classes. Parents and students who are unable to attend this meeting will be asked to make an appointment with Mr. Hudek to develop a four-year plan. |

only about career planning, but also about lifestyles in general. In class, they often ask, “Why do we need to know this?” To help answer that question, more than fifty parents and community workers will be presenting occupational information and engaging students in activities that demonstrate how the skills they acquired in school are used in their work. Career Day is being planned by the Guidance Department, and is the result of discussions about how to help students become future-oriented in their thinking. Career development is a major component of the guidance curriculum, along with academic development and social/personal skills acquisition. Parents interested in sharing information about their careers with students on March 21 are asked to call Mrs. Daniels (D-6) or Mr. Hudek (7-12) at 947-4328.
