In 1941, at the age of 14, and after completing the 8th grade, Robert
Kallsen had to drop out of school to work on his family farm in northwest Iowa.
He worked on the farm for the next 5 years to help support the family,
and then enlisted in the U S Army.
In the Army, Robert quickly learned that education was the key to contributing
in a meaningful way to society, and ultimately, controlling one’s own destiny.
He began to take classes while in the Army and completed his GED studies,
earning a high school diploma.
Margaret Morley Kallsen graduated from
Wall
Lake High
School in 1950 and was selected class valedictorian.
She then attended college in
Sioux City
earning a degree in business.
Knowing how important education was, Robert and Margaret vowed to make certain
that each of their children would not only finish high school, but graduate from
college as well. All seven of their
children have at least four-year college degrees and most have post-graduate
degrees in education, accounting, public administration, public service and law.
It is in their honor, and in honor of their drive to make certain that
education was important to, and available to, all who seek to go to college,
that this scholarship is awarded. |
