Creating a Greener Hinton

MCj04418280000[1]The Hinton Schools’ monthly newsletter is a key means for communicating school news and information to parents and patrons.  Especially valued by parents are the lunch menus and the schedule of upcoming activities.  The Board of Directors has authorized “Going Green” by disseminating this letter to parents electronically.  Those who desire to receive a hard copy may still do so by picking one up in the superintendent’s office or requesting one be sent home with their child.  Copies will also be available at Ampride and BD’s.  The lunch menus and monthly activities schedule will still be printed in hard copy format, front and back, on one sheet and distributed to parents of elementary students in their backpack take home materials.

Saving money on paper, postage, postage return charges and energy associated with running the copier machine, not to mention the time required for copying and assembling a hard copy newsletter, was compelling in a year when state funding has been reduced due to shortages in estimated tax collections in Iowa.  The newsletter will have a brand new look and feel to it.  It will be sent to you via email and will also be available on the schools website.

Standardized Testing in November

Hinton students in grades three through eleven will take the Iowa Tests in the morning hours during the week of November 9-13. The Iowa Tests, formerly called the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills and the Iowa Tests of Educational Development, help teachers and parents assess a student's annual growth in a number of skill areas and they provide an indication of how a student's performance compares to other students in Iowa and in the nation. Since the adoption of No Child Left Behind legislation, student scores on these tests have been used to assess the effectiveness of local school programs against a high national standard of performance. Historically, Iowa students have scored above the national average on these tests. Parents are asked to take special care to see that their children get a good night's rest and a nourishing breakfast on the mornings of the tests. Parents with questions about the Iowa Tests are welcome to call Mrs. Daniels (D-6 School Counselor) at 947-4428 or Mrs. Clausen (7-12 School Counselor) at 947-4328.
