WEC Academic Awards Banquet

The twelfth annual War Eagle Conference Academic Awards Banquet was held on March 23, 2011 at Spalding Catholic High School. The top 5% of the juniors and seniors in all of the schools in the conference were recognized.  Guest speaker was Father Kevin Richter.  Freshmen and sophomores in the top 5% will receive conference certificates at our awards ceremony on May 19. 1.jpg

Technology Committee Develops New Plan

donateSeventeen people, including parents, students, teachers, and administrators met monthly from January through March to develop a new technology plan for the district. They first wrote a vision statement for the district – “The vision of the Hinton Community Schools is to prepare 21st Century learners for the future, recognizing that technology is an integral part of virtually every aspect of daily life. To accomplish this, every classroom must be equipped with diverse technologies to support teaching and learning and every teacher must be knowledgeable and skilled in the use of technology in daily instruction.”  The various components of the new plan address:  classroom equipment, professional development, parent and community information, managing resources, security,  policies, budget, and program evaluation. The last task of the committee was to prioritize actions for next 1-3 years. These priorities will be put into an action plan after budget estimates for the next few years are determined.

·         The priorities the committee decided on include:

·         professional development for staff

·         projectors in all classrooms

·         enhancing our current infrastructure to support more wireless technology

·         one-to-one  Netbook program for all high school students

·         an age appropriate lab for PK-3 students

·         small  classroom computer stations with 2-5 computers

·         sets of classroom responders

·         Smart Boards

To help us accomplish our goals and meet our needs a little more quickly, we are asking parents and community members to donate computers – new or used, to help set up our mini-classroom labs and our PK-3 lab. If you have something to donate, please contact Ben Hertenstein at 947-4328. (No CRT monitors, please)

Track Meet Volunteers Needed

After the first of the year, organization for the coming track season begins. This will be the 21st season of hosting track meets at the Held Sports Complex. Once again, we will be hosting a seventeen-team girl’s invitational on Friday, April 15th, and another fourteen team boys meet on Thursday, April 14th. Our junior high teams will also be hosting their co-ed invitational on Friday, May 13th. This year will also be host to the Coed Regional/District track meet on Thursday, May 12th. As you can see, we will again be very busy this spring. 

Volunteers make our track meets go. Each year between 30-40 people give of their time and their talents to make Hinton a quality place to run. If you can help, whether you are a veteran or a first-timer, we’d love to have you. There are jobs for everyone, and you don’t need to know one thing about track.  This is a fun event, and a great way to meet people. If this is something you’d like to pursue, don’t hesitate to call Ben Hertenstein, Athletic Director, at 712-947-4328 (school), 712-947-4195 (home) or 712-223-1365(cell) and volunteer for the high school or junior high meets. Ben will be glad to set you up in a job suitable for you. The first meet is April 14th, so don’t delay. Plans are being made as you read this. The two high school invitational meets start at 5:00 pm and the junior high meet starts at 4:00 pm. The Coed Regional/District meet will start at 4:00 pm. We hope you can get involved!
