First Grade Curriculum News

In curriculum news, the latest buzz words are “Common CORE”. Math in first grade addresses and is aligned to the new Common CORE standards. Rather than completing pages in a workbook, students are using “Math Journals” (spiral notebooks) to understand numbers and to show different problem solving strategies. During this first quarter, students have been exploring 2D shapes, practicing correct formation of the numbers 1-10, learning to spell and read the number words one through ten, solving addition word problems, and counting and writing numbers to 100. The students enjoy using their journals every day. The teachers are pleased to see them making connections, building conceptual understanding, and thinking mathematically.

Picture Day
SMILE :) Picture day is coming October 2, 2012. All students in Preschool to Eleventh Grade
Fourth grade is TREE-RRIFIC!!
Fourth graders spent a beautiful September day with Victoria at Hillview studying and learning about trees. Victoria taught the various parts that make a tree grow, and students were able to understand how important trees are to humans as well as insects and other living animals.

First concert of the season!
The first concert of the 2012-2013 school year will be held on Monday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hinton gym. The concert will feature the JH Chorus, JH Band, HS Chorus, and HS Band. The HS Chorus will be ending their portion of the program with two patriotic numbers. “Song of the Unsung Hero” will feature a group of sixth grade students singing with the eighty high school students. The final number, “Where Have the Fallen Gone?” will feature all 7th-12th grade vocal music students singing together (145 singers). Both numbers will feature guest brass players! Admission for the concert will be $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for students, and free for preschool. Come for a night of great music!
