7th Grade Social Studies & JH Football

Mr. Gillaspie’s Social Studies Classes

Welcome back to another fun filled school year! The 7th grade 2019-2020 Social Studies curriculum has changed quite a bit from last year. Instead of learning about American History, the curriculum has switched to Contemporary Global Affairs.

This is a good change as we are now going to touch on the past as well as how it will affect our future. We will be studying very important topics that pertain to our world today and diving in deeper with how the past has played a major role with our present. Topics we will be covering this year include: Globalization, Population Growth, Climate Change, Energy Resources, Food Supply, Habitat Preservation, Health, Migration, Pollution, Water Resources, Standard of Living, and Human Rights.

I will be gearing this curriculum to more of a project based learning to better understand how these topics affect not only the students in Hinton, IA, but world wide.

We have also added World Geography as a High School class that I will be teaching as well. In this class we will be looking at similar topics as the 7th grade curriculum, but will dive in much deeper into specific regions of the world.

In other news, the Middle School Football teams are off to a hot start this year. WE began the season on September 10 against Westwood. The 7th grade team lost a tight one 12-8 while the 8th grade team won 20-0.

On September 17 the teams traveled to Le Mars to face Gehlen. Both teams won. The 7th grade score was 12-8 and the 8th grade won 20-6.

September 24th the teams traveled to Unity Christain where the game was rained out. The 7th graders were ahead 6-0 when the game was called due to lightning. There will be no make up date.

October 1st we travel to Lawton to face the Eagles, October 8, West Sioux comes to town and we finish the season October 15 against Akron Westfield.

Go Blackhawks!

5th Grade News

With the new year off to a fast start, 5th-grade students are working on transitions between classrooms. This is the first year these students are expected to transition between class periods using the three minute transition time to get from place to place. The first few weeks were a little rough, but we are getting better! Some of us are now realizing how quick three minutes can go.

This transition process requires students to be organized and prepared for class. We encourage families to make sure their child has a binder and folders for classes. Please check with your child to ensure they have all the materials they will need for the rest of the year.

Before we know it, the weather will be changing. Please make sure your child has the appropriate clothing for outdoor recess.

For your convenience, spelling lists are also available online. To find the list, visit the Hinton Middle School Homework Website.  From there, find the "grade level" dropdown menu and select the grade you are searching for. You will then be taken to a new page where all the homework should be throughout the week by each subject. You will find the list for spelling tests in the Language Arts row and in the Thursday column.

K-8 Physical Education

With the start of school in P.E. class students need to have a tennis shoes. If a student likes to wear boots, flip flops, or other types of sandals please have them bring tennis shoes in their backpack on P.E. days so they can change into them at P.E. time. If you can help remind your students to wear their tennis shoes or bring their tennis shoes on P.E. days it would be greatly appreciated. There are two main reasons for wanting the students in tennis shoes for P.E. The first reason is safety. The second reason is boots can damage the flooring and we want to keep our gym floors looking nice for years to come. The P.E. schedule for each class for the week is available by clicking here.
